Can't connect to onboard LAN (SOLVED)

Hi Guys

I’ve just installed a new motherboard to my NAS running Openmediavault and thankfully that’s sorted out all the problems I was having, however, the new motherboard comes with onboard Gigabit LAN but I cannot get it connect to my network, I can connect through the PCI ethernet card I had installed previously, I’ve set up the onboard to exactly the same settings as the PCI card but it’s difficult to give any more information, inxi -F, ipconfig, lshw, lspci all return “command not found” so I assume these functions are not installed with Openmediavault.

I could leave the card but I’m hoping to get faster transfer speed with the onboard LAN also I need to free up that PCI slot

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

Graeme

Boot something like a peppermint LiveCD/LiveUSB and run those commands

Ok as it happens it connected straight away through the onboard LAN in a live session

no output

OK reboot … then run:

and post any output

if there’s no output run:

sudo modrpobe r8169

then post the output from:

lsmod | grep r8169

and did networking work on the Gb ethernet after the
sudo modrpobe r8169
command ?

I’ll try that tonight when I get home I say try because things have went spectacularly wrong since my last post, apart from the ethernet problem I couldn’t get it to boot from USB, I need to be able to do that because I want to remove the CD drive to free up an IDE channel, I was looking in the bios to see if I could see any reason for it not booting from USB and I set it for optimized defaults (F7) and now it wont boot, it gets part way through the boot process and suddenly shuts down. I can’t access the bios to change it back because pressing any key on the keyboard causes it to instantly shut down, I didn’t have much time to spend on it this morning so that’s the current status.

yeah I know what you’re thinking you don’t have to say it :-[

Graeme

Has this new motherboard ever booted a LiveUSB ?

Has this new motherboard ever booted a LiveUSB ?

No

Try resetting the BIOS using the jumper on the motherboard.

Do you know how to do that ?

Do you know how to do that ?

Dont have a clue

You’ll have to give me the motherboard model again … so I can look for the manual

You'll have to give me the motherboard model again .. so I can look for the manual

Gigabyte GA-X38-DS4

Thanks

Graeme

Download this manual:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11876059/motherboard_manual_ga-x38-ds4-e.pdf

then see page 34 for instructions how to short the pins to clear the CMOS (BIOS)

Please let me know when you have the manual, so I can delete it from my dropbox  (no rush though … it can stay there till this is solved)

Thanks for that

I’ve got it downloaded to my Dropbox so I can get it when I get home

I had a quick look and it looks quite straightforward only this concerns me

After system restart, go to BIOS Setup to load factory defaults (select Load Optimized Defaults) or manually configure the BIOS settings (refer to Chapter 2, "BIOS Setup," for BIOS configurations).

It was loading Optimized Defaults that stopped the PC booting in the first place ???

Just see if clearing the BIOS will allow you to access the BIOS again … if it does, we’ll go from there

[EDIT]

If you have the manual in your dropbox … I’ll remove it from mine now

Ok success

I followed the instructions on the manual as you suggested and it’s booting up again, still no onboard LAN or USB boot

Can’t tell you how relieved I am to see it booting again, thank you

Graeme

Here’s the outputs you asked for earlier

lsmod | grep r8169

r8169 41077 0
mii 12595 3 8139too, r8139cp, r8169

I tried creating a USB startup disc using a 40gb External USB Hard Drive, it attempted to boot from that drive but failed with this message

Verifying DMI Pool Data ERROR: No configuration file found No DEFAULT orUI configuration directive found boot: (flashing cursor)

I’m not sure if this motherboard can boot from a USB flash drive because I don’t really see that option in the boot menu, here’s the options I have
(1) Floppy
(2) LS120
(3) * Hard Disk
(4) CDROM
(5) ZIP
(6) USB-FDD
(7) USB-ZIP
(8} USB-CDROM
(9) USB-HDD
(10) Legacy LAN

a) I want you to reboot , then send the output from:

lsmod | grep r8169

run both BEFORE and after running

sudo modprobe r8169

I’m trying to find out if t5hat module is being loaded at bootup.

b) In the BIOS … is the USB stick listed as a USB HDD ?

Hi Mark

I’ll carry out your instructions as soon as i can, but it’s now decided it’s not booting, during the boot process it stalls at “Verifying DMI pool data” or something like that, I may have re-install OMV and start from scratch, but even booting into a live session is not showing the boot drive in file manager, so I’ll somehow have to sort that out before we can go any further

Sorry

Graeme
