Can't get Linux driver to load

I have a Samsung ML- 2010 laser printer. I have it installed successfully using Windows Vista. The driver disk that came with the printer has a Linux driver. My problem is I can’t get the driver to run. I think it might be me being unfamiliar with most things Linux. (Samsung support is seemingly non-existent). When I place the disk in the DVD caddy it shows on my Fedora 11 desktop. To this extent it does autorun. But it does not run the set up executable. I’ve tried clicking on the setup.sh file to no avail. I’m clipping the list of supported Linux versions from the Samsung literature:

As you can see it does not mention Fedora, though Redhat is included.

The best I can get is a brief flash of a window that is then (it seems) suppressed. I am unsure if this is because the driver just won’t run on Fedora or whether there is some code at work. There is no request for authentication. And the Firewall appears to be disabled (though I can’t see how this would be culpable).

Am I pursuing a useless course here or am I just useless?

All advice appreciated.

It won’t be quite the same as on Windows … “hopefully” what you’ll see on the CD is a “.ppd” file … can you list the CD contents, or at least the contents of the “linux” folder to give us an idea?

I bought one of these about a week ago and am really pleased.

  1. Don’t bother with the samsung driver. It may be good but it installed cups 1.1. Run the uninstall script if you haven’t done so.

  2. I didn’t even try the gutenprint drivers (maybe the ml4500 is compatible?)

  3. I did try the foomatic ml-2010 driver which is excellent 600x600dpi

  4. I settled on the splix driver which does 1200x600 dpi and is even better on gradients (I couldn’t see any difference between the two drivers when printing text)


splix drivers are available as a .RPM, here:

or to install the drivers from the CD, try this
(first you need to make the directory containing setup.sh the current directory, then run setup.sh as root)

copy the “linux” directory from the CD to your home directory, then open a terminal and enter:

cd ~/linux
sudo setup.sh

Many thanks, gentlemen. On the ball as usual. I downloaded the Splix driver without a hitch, had to make a small settings change, and I now have one working Samsung printer thanks to you both. Thank you once again. I now have a full working Linux system and I no longer have to rely on the vagaries of Vista and Network Local Awareness and the Network Connectivity Status Indicator (whoever wrote that useless code must be truly certified insane).
