Docky Docking (SOLVED)

Hi Guys

I installed Docky on my Grand-Daughters PC (PM4) because she has a habit of getting her desktop icons all over the screen, the problem is if I try to drag anything into the dock it just bounces back to where it came from, I can overcome that by opening the program which automatically places an icon on the dock then right clicking on the icon then “pin to dock”, the only problem is I can’t do that with SSB icons because opening an SSB doesn’t place an icon on the dock.

Any help would be much appreciated

What is an SSB icon?

SSB=Site Specific Browser it’s what you get when you create a link to a website or web application in ice which is a program developed by one of the Peppermint devs to treat a web application like a local application that you can place in your menu or on your desktop.

I know i haven’t described that very well but I’m sure you get the idea

Just out of curiosity are you able to drag desktop icons straight into Docky ?

I’ve just been having a play with docky, and sure enough, “occasionally” it won’t let me drag/drop a .desktop file to it … springs back to original locations.

I’ve found that quitting docky … then restarting it seems to clear whatever’s wrong.

give that a shot.

BTW, I take it you’re right-clicking an SSB menu item and selecting “Add to desktop” … then dragging the desktop icon to docky ?

Yes that’s how I’m doing it I can’t drag anything straight from the menu.

I’m still at work but I’ll try what you suggest when I get home and let you know how it goes

Odd, it works for me :o

Something else to try …

Quit Docky … then delete these 2 folders

~/.gconf/apps/docky-2
and
~/.cache/dicky

Log off/on (not just restart docky) and see if you can drag drop stuff now.

Be aware, that will reset docky back to defaults.

I did exactly what you suggested except I couldn’t find ~/.cache/dicky but I did find ~/.conf/docky and deleted that instead (sorry I couldn’t resist that )

unfortunately I’m getting the same thing, when I drag a desktop icon into the dock a message pops up “drop to add to dock” but when I release my finger from the left mouse button it heads straight back to where it came from, I’ve tried it with different themes, panel mode and non panel mode, 3D mode and non 3D mode but it just wont work

Try opening the

~/.local/share/applications

or

/usr/share/applications

directories … and dragging the shortcuts from there.

The SSB shortcuts will be at the first location.

Unfortunately no, also I can’t find any of the SSB’s in /usr/share/applications but I tried an application directly from there and that wouldn’t work either just bounces straight back:(

OK, let’s try removing everything and starting again.

sudo apt-get remove --purge docky

then

sudo apt-get autoremove

then

sudo apt-get clean

then

rm -rv ~/.gconf/apps/docky-2

then

rm -rv ~/.cache/docky

Now just to be sure it’s all gone … log off/on.

Now reinstall with:

sudo apt-get install docky

Btw, the SSB shortcuts are (in your home folder) at:-

~/.local/share/applications

The shortcuts at:-

/usr/share/applications

are the “system wide” applications.

Ok I followed your instructions and it’s just the same whether I try to drag the icons from the desktop, ~/.local/share/applications or /usr/share/applications, it makes no difference

OK, let’s see if we can get a clue what’s going wrong.

run:

sudo killall docky

then

docky

For the time being, DO NOT close that terminal or docky will exit with it.

now drag a .desktop file to docky … are there any errors in the terminal ?

Yes i deliberately put it there solely for the purposes of testing it in Docky

Ok should I uninstall Docky before I install the .deb or would it be better to use the PPA ?

Just download the .deb … then close docky … then double-click the .deb to install … then restart docky.
