30mins ago i upgraded Ubuntu from 10.10 to Natty (11.04). It asked me, what i wanted to do with GRUB and i selected ‘use local version currently installed’.
It then restarted and I got the following error message .
‘’ error: symbol not found : ‘grub_env_export’.
really need to get grub fixed ASAP, i’m at a mates, so internet is available .
Got the link to get a live CD
You can get the 11.04 LiveCD image from here… then burn it to CD, or USB
Be sure to get the correct architecture (32bit or 64bit) for the version you have installed.
Ok so the output:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l

OK, boot to the 11.04 LiveCD… select “Try Ubuntu” (NOT “Install Ubuntu”) and when you’re at the desktop, open a terminal and enter:
sudo mount /dev/sda3 /mnt
sudo grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/boot /dev/sda
Then REBOOT, to Ubuntu on the hard drive, open a terminal, and enter:
Next time you reboot, you should be offered both OS’s.
Once again! Thanks Mark! Oh btw, is there anyway I can move the launcher so it’s on the bottom? I don’t like it at the left hand side. Also can you use Emerald themes?
If you really want to go to the trouble of manually compiling Emerald… It looks like it can be made to work:
As for moving the launcher… NO, and according to Mark Shuttleworth there are no plans to make it movable.
Nothing stopping you logging on to the “classic” (GNOME 2) desktop though, and then (if you wish) using another dock bar.
I’m pretty sure I’ll just stick to the default themes I have then (: haha. I guess me and “Mr Shuttleworth” might be needing to have a few words.
I like the Unity desktop better! one of the reasons I upgraded shame about the launcher though.
Just because Shuttleworth says it’s to remain on the left doesn’t mean some clever guy/gal won’t work out how to shift it… that’s the thing about open source
Same goes for third party themes etc.
Give em time… probably just a case of “Watch this space”
Hehe, well I hope someone uses their nog and figures out how to move it Oh mark, check your PM’s good sir!
