In my previous thread on this subject I allowed myself to get sidetracked.
I have, following Mark’s instructions, removed the Virtual Box that came bundled with my Mint 13 (Cinnamon).
Also, following Gearhead’s advice, have downloaded the Deb7 version of Virtual Box.
All I need now is to know how I install it. I do have the GDebi Package Installer 0.8.5build1. Where do I go from here?

Well, I thought I had, downloaded the Deb7 (AMD64) version of VirtualBox, started the GDebi Package Installer, went File, Open, selected the VB deb from the list of downloads and let the installer have its head. It got to a point where it said the installation had completed, but I can’t find any trace of it in my Menu.

It may be under your settings or preferences menu, or something similar. It often gets mistaken as a settings or admin application.
I’ve found “Oracle VM VirtualBox” under “System Tools”, but think that it is the bundled version, which I actually remove under Mark’s instructions. I’ll run through that remove sequence again and see if that gets rid of the shortcut.
have you tried running it? that sounds like it may be it.
I think I have got it now, its actually installing XP64 on a 10GB partition, its a piddly little window in the middle of my screen at the moment. Hope I can do something about that when I get to use it!
It may have been better to add the repo rather than downloading the .deb … I’m not sure if the .deb adds the repo itself … but installing Virtualbox by adding the repo would have meant it was always kept up-to-date.
(and along with dkms, it would survive a kernel update)
I suppose you could add the repo now (if it hasn’t already) … and install dkms (if not already installed)

it may also be a good idea to install the extension pack:

and “Guest Additions” in the Windows guest.
You’re also going to want to add yourself to the vboxusers group … for USB passthrough to work.

How? At the moment my Virtual_XP64 doesn’t recognise most of my USB devices, in particular my Iomega external hard drive.
Sorry if I appear thick, but the one thing that doesn’t come with Linux (or any other OS for that matter) is a booklet listing all the terminal commands. I well remember the massive list of MSDOS commands that came with my first Dell 386 PC. Very instructive, but no doubt expensive to produce which is why, of course, documentation tends to be minimal these days. That’s O.K. until you find yourself asking “How do I get online?” and the answer is “Go online and download the ‘help’ manual.” ??? I think its called ‘Catch 22’.
