Linux mint 13 cinnamon in fallback/rendering mode

Hello Folks,

Freshly installed LM13 on a new desktop base late on last night and for some reason I seem to be in this rendering mode and can’t figure a way out … going round in circles,so I figured it’s time to stop and ask… I get a popup message saying that it is running in software rendering mode and that Cinnamon is running without video hardware acceleration, using fallback mode is awful and I’d really like to get cinnamon back. Let me know if you need more info . . . .

New desktop base with an Intel 3.2 ghz processor and 8gb of RAM so it should be enough for cinnamon, just. ::slight_smile:

How many users did you set up? Does this particular user have resticted group permissions?

Seems you’re using the vesa graphics drivers … what’s the output from:

sudo lshw -C display

?

Probably should check the dmesg log too, but I’m not sure of the syntax and not in front of a Linux PC right now :frowning:
Could try something like:

I’m going to guess the i915 driver is unaware of that hardware (probably Intel HD 4600 - haswell) as it’s too new for Mint 13 (Ubuntu 12.04)

I gather support was added in Ubuntu 13.04 … so Mint 15 onwards

You might want to try a later version of Mint.

That Intel graphics driver installer is also for 13.04/Mint 15 … but it may not work in Mint at all unless you con it into thinking it’s running on Ubuntu.
Shouldn’t be necessary though … 13.04 onwards should just detect the chip and install the drivers

Mint 15 will now be “end of life” so you’ll want to try Mint 16

Guess I’ll go with LM16 then, I’d put 13 on cos of the support cycle but I’ll just overwrite root and then upgrade again when 17’s out and stable.

If you can wait 3 months…Mint 17 LTS will be out, with 5 years of support. Mint 16’s support finishes in July, and there isn’t a “straight” upgrade process for Mint (it’s a backup-wipe-install-restore). Have you considered Kubuntu, as an alternative? The upgrade process is simpler as Ubuntu does a “package” upgrade method (it’s one-click) - you still have to backup your files, but that’s only in case of failure.

Back up and running by the time I had a shower with LM16 on the desktop and it appears flawless out of the box so far, just doing updates and will check driver manager when that’s finished, should have trusted the newer version to have better support, you live n learn… this seems VERY snappy and resposive so far, didn’t overwrite /home so the tweaks I did do to the desktop/browser were all in place as they were, fingers crossed anyway as this is my first time for years with Intel gear but there seems plenty of support for it after my bouts of searching earlier !

I was going to give it a couple of months anyway once LM17 came out just to make sure updates/bugs were ironed out nicely, I always do, and then upgrade. To be fair, I’ve got the clean installs off to a tee now (and learnt my lesson and backup everything now!) so I prefer to do it that way and do as I’ve just done, leaving /home in place for data/settings to be kept intact, it’s so simple once you’ve got your head round it after coming from windows… I really like Cinnamon and believe me I’ve trialled just about everything, I think KDE’s a fantastic desktop but it’s too much for me, I fiddled too much and broke it too often lol… I’ve really settled into cinnamon since it’s been out, it seems to suit me 8), but thanks for the suggestions anyway.

Updates nearly done, I shall carry on tweaking and see if my odd sound problem with my 4.1 speakers has gone, could be back soon if not ! :o

No joy on youtube, videos don’t play, just a black rectangle, no play/pause buttons come up on the video, I have adblockplus and noscript installed in firefox but I’ve checked and nothing is blocking it?

I get this software rendering peoblem too with cinnamon

I use an intel g465 CPU and two monitors HDMI and DVI, have the official intel driver installed, and it works in XFCE

Do I have to add an instruction to use intel driver ?

Note: i did just go and replace the other drivers with “intel”, and also added

I really like Cinnamon, but it does give probs with graphics.

I’ve got a Sandy Bridge CPU running Cinnamon, I’ll have a look on my laptop tonight and post up my xorg.conf
The issue has gotta be with config - I know the GPU & driver to be good
