problem installing ubuntu

hi, i’ve got an old desktop i’ve been using for mostly audio recording,
pentium 4 - 2.6 - 500mb ram and 2 hard drives running xp home sp1,
original disk is broken and os is unstable !
i downloaded ubuntu latest version and burned it to cd.
when i try to install i get error message, - saying Try (hd0,0) NTFS5
Error prefix is not set, and NTFS Partition not cleanly unmounted,
at this stage the comp starts to install then stops responding half way through
can anybody help !!!
cheers, John

Is this a WUBI installation (ie. Ubuntu installed in Windows) ?
or
Is this a “proper” Installation (ie. Ubuntu installed by booting to the LiveCD) ?

HI I’VE TRIED INSTALLING IN WINDOWS, AND ALSO TRIED TO INSTALL
FROM THE LIVE CD, AS A FULL INSTALL!
CHEERS, JOHN

Have you tried running CHKDSK /F from within Windows to check the drive for errors ?

Does the LiveCD boot to a working desktop ?

If you have 2 hard drives, have you tried removing the Windows drive, and installing to the other drive ?

YES DID CHDSK BUT STILL THE SAME PROB,
I’LL TRY THE OTHER SUGGESTIONS AND LET U KNOW HOW IT GOES
