Hi all, I’m completely new to Linux and am certainly no web developer. I currently have a website that runs an Access database with ASP and am looking to switch over to PHP/Linux. I was wondering if anyone can recommend a hosting company for a dedicated entry level server. Approx 100Gb HD, 2Gb RAM. My current host for the Access database is unfortunately not an option.
Depends what you want to do with it really … there’s quite a wide range to choose from. Most companies are headed towards cloud solutions so physical boxes seem to be getting more expensive. You’ve said 100Gb disk and 2Gb ram, what sort of CPU do you need and how much bandwidth?
I’d be sort of recommending a cloud / virtual solution unless you really need a physical box, in which case it depends on spec of the box … cheapest virtual I’ve come across is webfusion, I’ve a backup virtual on their cloud … it has it’s limitations, again, depends on what you’re going to be doing …
Previously I would’ve said 1&1 as I’ve used them before and they did an entry level box for £29 a month … but I’ve just looked and it’s £69 now …
I would second that. Also, are you sure you need a dedicated box, or even a VPS? If you get less than 30GiB of traffic per month, it would be worth going shared. Probably worth doing that to play with first anyway…
Mmm, with a load-balanced shared environment traffic isn’t necessarily an issue, it’s more a case of whether a shared environment is flexible enough to meet one’s needs … if you need custom products, shell access etc, a shared environment becomes less viable. That said, with VPS’s starting at £20 a month, it’s partly a case of whether you want the work and ongoing trouble of installing and maintaining your own server …
