I am using mint 17 64bit mate. On both my desktop and lap top…
They are both relatively new installations and I installed my VPN connection to both systems.
The VPN fails to connect on both computers, I removed the tick from all users and also tried reinstalling using a new name but still no connection.
I can see that there seems to be many issues with VPN and network manager is there any other software I could use for my VPN connections?
So what errors are you getting in /var/log/syslog when you try to connect ?
What type of VPN server ? IPsec, OpenVPN, PPTP ?
It is PPTP connection there are no errors shown by the network manager.
From the logs the error that happens every time I try to connect is : Office2 NetworkManager[870]: VPN plugin failed: 1
There are lots of others but they seem to be random no patten.
sudo apt-get install --reinstall network-manager-pptp network-manager-pptp-gnome network-manager-vpnc network-manager-vpnc-gnome
then if necessary, try these settings:
http://blog.geeky.name/post/2011/03/17/PPTP%3A-Ubuntu-Client-connect-to-Windows-VPN-Server
No change still no connection.
The settings from the post are the same as from my VPN company.
My android phone and tablet even my win 7 laptop all connect with no problems and it was working just fine in mint 13 so what have they done.
Would a different network manager be an option?
Still no joy…
and file: /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/MyVPNConnection: dose not exist in my mint17 set up so it could not be amended.

This is the log of my last attempt to log in to my VPN account.
The Network manager icon tells me vpn is active however, the broadcast i.p. address has not changed and the icon has not changed to a padlock symbol.
Is it possible to remove Network manager and use an alternative solution?
What’s the output from:
ls -a /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections
userone@Office2 ~ $ ls -a /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections
. … 000D0B6DA3C4 Ethernet connection 1 VPN
userone@Office2 ~ $
OK (if your VPN connection is called “VPN” in networkmanager), you want to add these 3 lines to
sudo gedit /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/VPN
(obviously replacing gedit with whatever the Mint text editor is called in the above command … unless you also have gedit installed)
refuse-chap=yes
refuse-eap=yes
refuse-pap=yes
Hi, these lines are already there:
refuse-chap=yes
refuse-eap=yes
refuse-pap=yes
Edit your VPN connection in networkmanager, and in the VPN > Advanced section make sure ONLY these 2 authentication methods are selected:-
MSCHAP
and
MSCHAPv2
Also enable Use point-to-point encryption (MPPE)
http://linuxforums.org.uk/MGalleryItem.php?id=1594
The set up looks just like this but the connection dose not work.
Have you tried deleting the VPN from NetworkManager, then setting it up manually as described here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VPNClient#PPTP
or
also leaving PAP and CHAP ticked in NetworkManager (and/or enabling “Allow stateful encryption”).
I do understand some computer stuff but this seems complex both to set up and to use.
Is there an alternative network manager that I can try?
Is there an alternative network manager that I can try?
Not that I’m aware of (that can set up VPN connections).
Do you know these -
the IP address or host name of the server ?
the name you wish to use to refer to the tunnel ? (not important)
the authentication domain name ? (if applicable)
the username you are to use ?
the password you are to use ?
whether encryption is required ?
Don’t tell them me (nor post them here) … just tell me if you know them.
Reference links:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VPNClient#PPTP
and the “configuration by hand” section of:
http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/howto-ubuntu.phtml
I have the
Gateway address
User name
Password
Requires (Authentication)
MSCHAPv2
Point to Point encryption (PPTP)
Do you think installing/Using KVpnc would be a good plan?
OK, try this:-
(obviously replace and with you actual details)
sudo gedit /etc/ppp/peers/myvpn
and make it read:-
remotename myvpn
linkname myvpn
ipparam myvpn
pty "pptp --nolaunchpppd "
name
usepeerdns
require-mppe
refuse-eap
noauth
adopt defaults from the pptp-linux package
file /etc/ppp/options.pptp
SAVE the file and exit gedit
Run:
sudo gedit /etc/ppp/chap-secrets
add a single new line that reads:-
myvpn *
SAVE the file and exit gedit.
Now what happens if you run:
pon myvpn nodetach
or
sudo pon myvpn nodetach
userone@Office2 ~ $ sudo pon myvpn nodetach
[sudo] password for userone:
Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 ↔ /dev/pts/5
sh: 1: cannot open uk3.purevpn.net: No such file
Modem hangup
Connection terminated.
userone@Office2 ~ $
userone@Office2 ~ $ pon myvpn nodetach
Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 ↔ /dev/pts/5
sh: 1: cannot open uk3.purevpn.net: No such file
Modem hangup
Connection terminated.
userone@Office2 ~ $
I notice mention of a modem when the connection is made over my existing cable internet connection.
